I've always been a fan of hybrids, mash-ups, and contrasting...(caveat) when done right. This "fedora fitted" (I just sort of named it myself) is kind of dope! Also seeing as I am an avid supporter of the classic fedora, depending on how I deem myself to look with it on you just may catch me sporting this Soulland piece.

Disney to Buy Marvel for $4 Billion [BUSINESS]

LOS ANGELES — The Walt Disney Co. is buying Marvel Entertainment Inc. for $4 billion in cash and stock, bringing such characters as Iron Man and Spider-Man into the family of Mickey Mouse and WALL-E.Under the deal, which was announced Monday and is expected to close by the end of the year, Disney will acquire the rights to 5,000 Marvel characters. Many of them, including the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, were co-created by the comic book legend Stan Lee.
Disney CEO Robert Iger said Marvel's comic books, TV shows, movies and video games amounted to "a treasure trove of content." Iger said the deal would bring benefits like the ones Disney got from buying "Toy Story" creator Pixar Animation Studios Inc. for $7.4 billion in stock in 2006.
"The acquisition of Marvel offers us a similar opportunity to advance our strategy," Iger said, and "to build a business that is stronger than the sum of its parts."
Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" 71-week Chart Run Makes History [MUSIC]

I stumbled upon this Jason Mraz a few years back after reading an article about the pop pioneer, and have been a fan since the first song I heard; "Curbside Prophet". Fast forward and most of you have undoubtedly heard the infectious "I'm Yours" perhaps seen the video?
The geeky crooner has gone on to make history his story...and I have a few friends (one in particular...JB!) who will be delighted with this news.
AP NEW YORK — Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" has had the longest run on any song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The tune has spent 71 weeks on Billboard singles chart. It first charted in May 2008.
Mraz's hippie-friendly jam has been around even longer. He has played it on tour for five years and says fans at live shows always responded differently to it – and that inspired him to release the song.
The 32-year-old has spent the last two years on the road promoting his latest CD, the platinum-selling "We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things." That time on tour has been documented to "Jason Mraz' Beautiful Mess - Live from Earth," a live CD/DVD out Nov. 10.
The previous record-holder was LeAnn Rimes' late-1990s hit, "How Do I Live." It lasted 69 weeks.

'Bad Boys 3' In The Works! [MOVIES]
Imagine my glee, to awaken to such terrific news! Have I just made your Monday!? I just made mine!
Columbia Pictures is developing a third installment of the high-octane "Bad Boys" franchise, tapping Peter Craig to pen the screenplay.
The hope is to have a script that would reunite director Michael Bay, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. At this point, with the project in the early stages, none has a deal to return.
The "Boys" movies feature Smith and Lawrence as Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, caught up in cases involving car chases and explosions.
The first "Boys," released in 1995, helped launch Bay as a director and Smith as an action star even though it was not a fire-stamped blockbuster -- it grossed $66 million domestically and $141 million worldwide.

A Live Your Life post...and it's pretty funny to me. Something about white people getting buck to crunk music makes me smile...and the almost timid, "naughty" nature in which she speaks about it only amplifies the entertainment.

I've been listening a lot lately to "Wait (The Whisper Song)" by the Ying Yang Twins, where the lyrics are like, "Wait 'til you see my dick"--which is just amazing because it's whispered. The Triclo "Urban Tricycle" [COOL]
Fuctionality is at question, but there is much to be said (if you can find words) about the design. Definitely not your little red flyer!
Designed by Randall Marin, the Triclo is a conceptual design of what a tricycle can be in an urban environment. It uses an organic form and contemporary trend to balance out in visual volume and mass. The idea behind the design was to create a tricycle with a different look to capture the attention of onlookers.

Star Factory Shows Off Three Kinds of Nebulae [PHOTO]
Stunning. Makes you think, no?
This swirling ball of pink and blue gas is the Trifid Nebula, a rare combination of three different kinds of interstellar clouds located 5,500 light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius.
Captured by the European Southern Observatory’s 2.2-meter telescope at the La Silla Observatory in Chile, this image shows off the three distinct types of nebulae found in the Trifid. The bluish patch in the upper left is known as a reflection nebula because it scatters light from nearby stars. The largest of these stars, which were all born in the Trifid, can be seen shining in the center of the reflection nebula. It radiates hot blue light in the visible spectrum and gives the cloud a bluish tinge.
The bright pink circle in the lower half of the photo is an emission nebula, which glows red because it contains a core of hydrogen gas heated by hundreds of super-hot new stars. At the bottom of the emission nebula, a finger-shaped projection of gas points up at the Trifid’s central star. Known as an evaporating gaseous globule, or EGG, this dense blob of gas is a birthplace for new stars.
The Trifid’s third kind of nebula can be seen in the dark stripes that criss-cross the rest of the image. Called dark nebulae because of their light-obscuring properties, these clouds of gas and dust contain the remnants of previous star births. As higher pressure and temperatures build up inside the streaks of gas, nuclear fusion will lead to the formation of yet more stars.

Christopher Nolan's "Inception" Teaser Trailer [MOVIES]
Yahoo! Movies has debuted the teaser (key word is "teaser") trailer online for The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan's new film, Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy and Michael Caine.
Opening in theaters on July 16, 2010, the Warner Bros. Pictures release is described as a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind. Nolan also wrote the original screenplay.

Why Women Aren't Funny [PROVOCATION]
I recently came across a 2007 Vanity Fair article written by Christopher Hitchens, in which he argues why women are not funny. He concedes that this isn't resolute, and he does list exceptions, though crass: "In any case, my argument doesn't say that there are no decent women comedians. There are more terrible female comedians than there are terrible male comedians, but there are some impressive ladies out there. Most of them, though, when you come to review the situation, are hefty or dykey or Jewish, or some combo of the three."
Naturally those who disagree took aim, and fired. Including Alessandra Stanley's, who's retort in a 2008 issue of Vanity Fair titled "Who Says Women Aren't Funny?" prefaces the above video interview with Hitchens.
The basis of the idea is that men have to be funny...it's how we get women to like us. Women however, do not have to, or rather never had to be funny as we men already like women...for simply being women! Citing university studies, and using anecdotal mechanics along way, Hitchens makes a very good case, one that I prescribe to.
Hitchens speaks with Author Fran Lebowitz about the idea, to which she agrees and sums up the concept rather nicely:
"The cultural values are male; for a woman to say a man is funny is the equivalent of a man saying that a woman is pretty. Also, humor is largely aggressive and pre-emptive, and what's more male than that?"Touché!

CNE Opening Day costs just $1.75 [EVENTS]

In celebration of the 175th Anniversary of the City of Toronto, the Canadian National Exhibition launch the 2009 fair with an admission of just $1.75 on Opening Day: Friday, August 21, 2009.
Toronto Mayor David Miller will declare the 131st CNE open at 10 am and there are a number of festivities planned for this special day. In addition to the CNE's full roster of attractions, Opening Day will feature free birthday cupcakes for the first 175 people who visit the CNE Cupcake tent, a special ride offer (10 rides for $17.50) and a variety of concessions and games for $1.75.
The 10 finalists in the Toronto Song Contest will perform at 7 pm that evening on the Midway Stage and following the performances, the judges will proclaim the winner of the Toronto Song Contest!

Absolut Vodka's latest adventure in packaging pays tribute to the 40th anniversary of Woodstock with a celebration of rock music. The Absolut Rock Edition will go on sale next month at Selfridges of London before becoming more widely available in October. Absolut worked with designer Natalia Brilli to create the leather and studs design. Usain Bolt Sets A New World Record For Mens 100m [SPORTS]
A performance that solidifies him as the fastest man in the world (Again, as he set the previous world record a year ago with a time of 9.69), Usain Bolt ran the 100m in a mindbusting 9.58 seconds at the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin August 16th 2009. Orange County Choppers Builds an Electric Motorcycle [COOL]
Orange County Choppers, known for building machines as brutish as they are loud, has produced this paradoxical bike touted as the “first custom electric American chopper.” The showpiece exhibits the trademark OCC outrageous ode to flair and themed design, but this time you won’t hear it coming from a mile away.
On Wednesday, Siemens, the electronics and electrical engineering global powerhouse, unveiled the Smart Chopper it commissioned from the renowned custom motorcycle outfit. Siemens claims the bike has a 60-mile range and a 100 mph top speed. An onboard charging unit can be plugged into any 110-volt socket to charge the bike in five hours, and Siemens says it’ll charge in as little as one hour when plugged into a higher-voltage station. A single-speed, clutch-less transmission delivers the power from a 27-hp electric motor.
The Smart Chopper joins the growing ranks of electric motorcycles, including the Brammo Enertia, Zero X and the Mission One.

Nike's 'Hyperize' Ad: Durant, Lewis, Iquodala Salute '90s Hip-Hop [VIDEO]
In a hilarious new ad, Nike pays tribute to the glory days of '90s hip-hop (hat tip to AdFreak). The folks at Nike have assembled a faux rap ensemble called the Hyperizers featuring the Oklahoma City Thunder's Kevin Durant, the Orlando Magic's Rashard Lewis, the Cleveland Cavaliers' Mo Williams and the Philadelphia 76ers' Andre Iguodala.
Lewis ("Ice-O") sports a Kid N' Play-esque hairdo, Durant ("Velvet Hoop") looks like he stepped out of a Tribe Called Quest video, and Williams ("Fog Raw")...well, his hairstyle is certainly from a simpler time. Actually, the same can be said for some of the lyrics in this ad.

Michael Jackson Portrait by Andy Warhol Up For Auction [ART]
In 1984, this portrait of Jackson painted by Warhol, measuring 30 x 26 inches.
At the time, both men were at the a great height in their respective careers. Valued at approximately $850k, it is likely to fetch far more than that when it hits the auction block sometime soon in a New York auction. Currently, the screen-print portrait is on display at the British Music Experience in London.

It doesn’t get better for me than the Levi’s Vintage Clothing collection. The garments are produced to exact historical specifications, almost becoming new dead stock jeans. If you live in Europe or Japan it has been easier to get your hands on a pair of Levi’s LVC than if you live in the States. Well friends, times they are a changin’. LS & CO recently formed a specific group (called “XX” meaning “extra strong”) to consolidate the company’s premium businesses. This new division will be headed up by the well respected Maurizio Donadi, who is a veteran of both Diesel and RRL. Safe to say XX is in good hands. Along with the new focus on the premium market, you will see that LVC is going to have a more consistent presence in the land of the free, which is how it should be.
