Make It Rain: The Love of Money [APP]

For those who have grown tired of Flappy Bird, or didn't even have the opportunity to get tired of Flappy Bird, Make It Rain: The Love of Money is the current top free iOS App, and it's an anticapitalist spoof that’s making $50K per day!

May is the has been downloaded 1.6 million times, mostly on the iPhone, and it’s making $50,000 per day, half from in-game purchases and half from ads. Most of this has happened in the last week, with something like 250,000 installs per day. Based on reviews and other data, it appears to be particularly popular with young men in high school and college — the frat boy demographic.

Make It Rain co-creator Josh Segall is a bit befuddled. “The new Flappy Bird is about income inequality and political corruption,” he said. “I wish we had been expecting it because maybe then we would have made a game that people would want to play for longer.”

GAMEPLAY: You essentially make it rain until the virtual FBI investigate you virtual stockpile and threaten to seize it, but if you have the funds, you simply buy them off with a virtual bribe. Afterwards you may want to buy a virtual cigarette factory, or possibly a virtual strip mine. In the meantime, hire a virtual PR person and a virtual lobbyist.

It’s not necessarily clear that the app’s cynical undertones are getting through to its users. Sure, when you open the app the first screen shows quotes like “The love of money is the root of all evil.” But then you start swiping as fast as you can to make it rain.

“Some people are in on the joke and really get it and love it,” Segall said. “Some people it takes longer to get, I think.” He sent over a negative-turned-positive app review in which a person initially left a complaint about having spent so much real-world money to make his virtual-world money pile grow faster without reaching any sort of end point. The reviewer later added an update that said, “You end up scrambling for all this money, and for what? I’m definitely not happier I accumulated it. Valuable lesson.”

Mobius Motors: The African Built SUV [CARS]

Mobius Motors designs, manufactures and sells durable, affordable vehicles for Africa's mass market. We are reimagining the car; designing our vehicles around common road terrain, transport usage and consumer income profiles across the region.

American billionaire Ronald Lauder has reportedly provided start-up capital to Mobius Motors, a startup Kenyan car-manufacturing company that plans to build Africa’s cheapest car. Developed by 29 year-old Kenyan computer engineer Joel Jackson, will cost $10,000. Jackson and his team had initially planned for the car to cost $6,000, but as a result of the increasing cost of procuring steel spare parts, Mobius has had to raise its selling price to $10,000 to make the product commercially viable. But even at $10,000, Jackson believes his car is a preferable option to acquiring a pre-owned vehicle for the same amount.

According to a report by Kenya’s Business Daily, Lauder, who is worth about $3.8 billion, is offering Mobius Motors an undisclosed amount in debt which is convertible to equity. Mobius will use the money to assemble its first 50 units and establish a distribution network in Kenya. The most common vehicles across regions like East Africa are imported from more developed countries such as Japan, UAE and India. These vehicles are designed for areas with good road infrastructure - they are not built for an African environment. High import duties also make these vehicles relatively expensive.

To serve the African mass market, Mobius has built a car around the needs of local consumers.

The vehicles have the key functionality and durability of an off-road car, fit for travelling and carrying goods for long distances on bumpy dirt roads. The price is similar to a seven year old sedan vehicle, which is not designed to operate on degraded terrain reliably, nor carry the heavier loads common among consumers in these areas.

Mobius aims to empower transport entrepreneurs across Africa not just with more appropriate vehicles, but with the financing and business advice needed to operate a sustainable transport business, with interior than can be configured to haul either people or 1,100 pounds of cargo.

Marine Debris Typeface [FONTS]

This creation is a full set of letters made up of the 2041 pieces of junk Star went onto collect. From the start, the designer set a few guidelines: no bottles, cans, plastic bags or candy wrappers. He only wanted pieces that had washed up on shore. He also committed to keeping everything as-is. “The rules were to find the letterforms as they were, with no manipulation of any kind,” he says. “With some letters it would have been easy to bend or twist something to fit–but that would have been cheating my own rules. I enjoyed the idea that this was just a search and I didn’t have to do any thinking, just walk and observe.”

You can see all 2041 pieces in Star’s short film HERE, and when the typeface is released later this year, every single one of his pieces will be included, even if it’s only useful as ornamentation.

Apple iPhone 6 Sneak Peek [TECH]

Excitement for Apple’s next-generation iPhone 6 is really starting to build now, and new leaks are coming fast and furious. Supposed schematics for the iPhone 6 leaked from Apple’s manufacturing partners some time ago and as always, third-party protective case makers have been using them to begin designing cases in an effort to get a leg up on the competition. This year, however, people are also using the schematics to build mockups of the iPhone 6, and they may give us a very good idea of what the finished product will look like.

Now, new photos of iPhone 6 mockups have surfaced, potentially showing off all three colors the redesigned iPhone 6 side by side for the first time.

Take a look at the Space Grey, Silver, & Gold mock ups HERE.

Big K.R.I.T - Mt. Olympus [VIDEO]

K.R.I.T.'s sophomore album Cadillactica is coming soon.

Overdosed on hocus-pocus, jibber-jabber
Snap on my stature was firebreathin' dragon
King of every castle, how you signin' rappers?
All these labels must be givin' out a raffle
Wranglin' like cattle, keep a nigga shackled
Leavin' people baffled, tap dance nigga
Misleadin' all of your rap fans, nigga
Might as well just do a lap dance, nigga
Sap ass nigga
Do whatever for some dap ass nigga
I ain't got time
To watch out for children, stay out my kitchen
The shit that I'm cookin' ain't meant for your kind
Crackin' and bashin' the shit out your spine
King with a crown, humble and tall
Tyrants never keep quiet, they'd rather be violent
So I'm beheading them all!
The lay of the land, I'm settin' fire to buildings and bridges
You ain't sell out a show until you sell out one in Mississippi
What’s good for Hip Hop may not be good for my soul
So, I keep flexin', wreckin', for the people that respect it
Check it, fuck a Control

(Are you not entertained!)
Bih!

TYPO iPhone Keyboard Case [GADGETS]

For those who miss their Blackberry keyboard, but are simply too attached to their beloved iPhone, now you can pick up a TYPO (Co-founded by American Idol presenter Ryan Seacrest) case and qwerty keyboard for the iPhone 5/5s models from colette. The reviews have been less than stellar, but I'm still looking forward to testing it out myself.

Priced at €140 EUR (approximately $195 USD), the keyboard is available for order through colette’s website. It's pricy, but I figure they've incorporated the legal fees they had to shell out for Blackberry in the lawsuit earlier this year. Snapchat x Video & Instant Messaging [APPS]

Snapchat, everybody's favorite sexting app, has just grown up. Now, to complement its simple self-destructing messages, the iOS and Android apps both handle instant messaging and live video chats.

To use them, you just swipe right from the main camera screen to find a list of friends, from where you can send them a message or start a video call. In keeping with Snapchat's ethos, text is wiped as soon as you exit a chat screen, though you can tap messages to save if you so wish.

Video chats are designed to be ephemeral: a throbbing blue icon tells you when a friend notices you, and you press—and have to hold—it to provide a one-way video stream to their device. Your friend can do the same right back at you.

It's an interesting pair of additions. They radically expand functionality of Snapchat, but also avoid changing the purpose of the app. Sexting has never had it so good. [Snapchat]
