How To Not Die From Drinking!

It's new years eve, so it's bound to happen! I found some tips over at cracked.com that can prove pretty useful for a night like tonight...hopefully some you read it before it's too late!

Like everything else in life, getting drunk is something worth learning how to do right. Unfortunately, a lot of what we know about drinking and drunkenness we learned from our friends, while everyone involved was, you guessed it, drunk.

Great jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard dies at 70

This man right here is bepop!

LOS ANGELES — Freddie Hubbard, the Grammy-winning jazz musician whose blazing virtuosity influenced a generation of trumpet players and who collaborated with such greats as Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, died Monday, a month after suffering a heart attack. He was 70.

Hubbard died at Sherman Oaks Hospital, said his manager, fellow trumpeter David Weiss of the New Jazz Composers Octet. He had been hospitalized since suffering the heart attack a day before Thanksgiving.

A towering figure in jazz circles, Hubbard played on hundreds of recordings in a career dating to 1958, the year he arrived in New York from his hometown Indianapolis, where he had studied at the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music and with the Indianapolis Symphony.

Soon he had hooked up with such jazz legends as Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley and Coltrane.

"I met Trane at a jam session at Count Basie's in Harlem in 1958," he told the jazz magazine Down Beat in 1995. "He said, `Why don't you come over and let's try and practice a little bit together.' I almost went crazy. I mean, here is a 20-year-old kid practicing with John Coltrane. He helped me out a lot, and we worked several jobs together."

In his earliest recordings, which included "Open Sesame" and "Goin' Up" for Blue Note in 1960, the influence of Davis, Chet Baker and others on Hubbard is obvious, Weiss said. But within a couple years he would develop a style all his own, one that would influence generations of musicians, including Wynton Marsalis.

"He influenced all the trumpet players that came after him," Marsalis told The Associated Press earlier this year. "Certainly I listened to him a lot. ... We all listened to him. He has a big sound and a great sense of rhythm and time and really the hallmark of his playing is an exuberance. His playing is exuberant."

The Oculus Superyacht

I was watching The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen the other day and was mesmerized by Captain Nemo's ship the the Nautilus. I've now discovered for a cool $100 million I can get my own mini version. Kind of...
If had the means to buy myself an enormous luxury superyacht I'd have a hard time deciding between something sleek and discreet and something trendy, modern, and ready to make a statement. The Oculus Superyacht is the new flagship for Schöpfer Yachts and would fall into the second category, with such futuristic styling it barely looks like a yacht at all. 250 feet long, the exterior design is inspired by the creatures of the sea and is meant to represent a large jaw and eye socket when open. Interior features include 2 levels with luxurious 12 foot ceilings, a cylindrical double height dining area, and room to accommodate up to 12 guests comfortably.

Porsche Sled! [GADGETS]

With 5-10 inches predicted to fall tonight in Toronto this bad boy could prove to be a lot of fun for the avid tobogganer. I would have killed the playground back in the day with this right here!

As soon as the first snow falls, as immediately the snow slopes get rushed by several premium labels. Beside sunglasses and other lifestyle accessories they found sleds to be a profitable business. Lucky us, because they know how to produce astonishing pieces which aren’t just advanced in terms of technology. Sledding is not just a welcome change for the smallest, the silver design-sled by Porsche may now also pull the most style conscious person to have fun on a simple way. The noble aluminum sportster offers also functionality, thanks to its practical folding mechanism, and it is prepared for even the heaviest holiday dinner with a maximum capacity of 100kg.

Jay-Z Headlining Inauguration Weekend Club Party In D.C.

The Brooklyn rapper Jay-Z, whose lyrics President-elect Barack Obama channeled on the campaign trail in a swipe at his former rival, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, will headline an inaugural weekend opening party in Washington.

Jay-Z, along with singer Akon, and rappers T.I. and Young Jeezy, will perform at the Love nightclub on Friday, Jan. 16, the club's owner, Marc Barnes, said in an interview on Monday.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen SNEAK PEAK

The "Transformers" sequel starring Shia LaBeouf And Megan Fox{:)} is out in summer 2009, and new stills show the movie's incredible access to the pyramids of Egypt and visual proof that Shia's hand injury, from a car crash earlier this year, has been written into the film.
Directed by Michael Bay, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" shot some scenes in Giza at the pyramids, the first time the Egyptian government such access has been granted to the 5,000-year-old site.

Other scenes were shot in New Mexico, standing in for Eqypt. Says Bay:
'The Pentagon gave its stamp of approval to the film and allowed production amid the dunes of the Army's New Mexico missile range.
'They let us do the run of things, we have so many military assets. Plus, this is a missile range -- we can just fire into the set. It's a great place.'
Among the equipment used in the movie in the desert sequence alone were two A-10 Thunderbolt II 'Warthog' tank-killing jets, six F-16 Fighting Falcons, 10 armored Humvees, the Army's Golden Knights parachute team; two Abrams tanks, two Bradley tanks, two missile-launcher vehicles, two armoured personnel carriers; and a quarter-mile of the missile testing range, cleared of unexploded ordnance and built into an Egyptian town and temple.

Ciroc Vodka Wants A Blue Ball To Drop For NYE

Ciroc Vodka and Sean "Diddy" Combs have made an interesting offer to the city of New York. The company, which already has massive billboards installed in Times Square, has offered $1 million to a charity on behalf of the city in exchange for a New Year's Eve ball takeover. The vodka brand wants to change the historic crystal ball to blue to match the blue sphere on the Ciroc vodka bottle. Quite a stunt but I'd be surprised if city took the cash. It seems to be an opportunity like that should be worth at least $10 million. What the press release doesn't reveal is that Combs is already booked to host a party in Miami on New Year's Eve at the Fontainebleau.

LG To Premiere Skinniest TV at CES [GADGETS]

Not one to keep a low profile LG has been hitting the consumer electronics industry with some heat. It seems ever since they launched the chocolate (I still don't know what the fuss about that phone was for) they have been cranking out a serious series of products. They have upped the ante again by premiering the LH95 at CES, which is an LCD model with an LED backlight and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. With a thickness of only 24.8mm (0.98") it'll make mounting your TV seem like putting up a poster.

Hublot Black Caviar Bang Timepiece

I did a post on the white diamond version of this Hublot timepiece back when I use do notes on facebook. It's truly an amazing watch, that uses an ingenius method to set each stone to create the casing. This type of precision, and attention to quality may have been what prompted LVMH to purchase the wristwear company.

The Hublot Black Caviar Bang. Coming from the Big Bang line with all its derivatives, the Black Caviar Bang has an 18k white gold case and clasp that feature hundreds of precision cut black diamonds, for a total of 34.5 total carats. This includes 322 diamonds on the case, 179 on the bezel, and another 30 on the clasp at the end of the rubber strap. Black diamonds are exceedingly rare, and are attributed for most of the Black Caviar Bang's million dollar value.

A Day In the Life of Kanye West, Fashion Intern

So I posted the news about Kanye expressing interest in interning for Louis Vuitton or Raf Simons a few days back. Now, Complex Mag has gone on to outline how Yeezy's day would play out...simply hilarious!

• ‘Ye gets to work 13 minutes early—but doesn’t actually make it into the office until 9:20 after he’s informed that Intern Valet Parking doesn’t exist.

9:23 AM
• ‘Ye’s new boss asks him to go out for coffee. Surprisingly, Kanye agrees and returns 10 minutes later with the order perfectly executed, including change and receipt.

9:34 AM
• ‘Ye sends out his first company-wide, subject-only email: “HOW FUCKING HOT WAS THAT COFFEE???!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!”

$99 Blackberry Bold! [RETAIL]

I caught this in the weekend circular, and thought the boy Genius would have dropped the news, but I didn’t see it on there. Anyway, I suppose in a strategic move to take away some of the Storm’s thunder (You like that, right?) Barack Obama's Inauguration Suit.

I posted the news about Michelle's dress, now designers have weighed in on how Barack just put himself together January 20th 2009.

Although the world now knows that President-elect Barack Obama will wear a Hart Schaffner Marx single-button, notch-lapel tuxedo for the evening festivities on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, that isn’t stopping others from lining up for the role of the administration’s First Tailor. So WWD asked men’s designers what they thought the new president should wear on his historic day.

With his lanky 6-foot, 2-inch frame, basketball-toned physique and sophisticated élan, Barack Obama has all the makings of a presidential style icon. With endless references to John F. Kennedy, designers are eagerly anticipating a return to Camelot-era glamour. But Obama has cultivated a style all his own. Kennedy was a product of the East Coast establishment and its preppy, New England aesthetic, while the President-elect has humbler roots — albeit roots that led him to Columbia and Harvard (Kennedy’s alma mater). Indeed, Obama’s style tends to reflect his political philosophy: practical but carefully considered; modern but accessible.

While JFK was said to be horrified when he appeared on the cover of GQ — he didn’t want to be seen as fashion-conscious — Obama has happily appeared on the covers of GQ, Esquire, Men’s Vogue and even Men’s Health (with all his clothes on). “This is the first president in a very long time that has a great body for clothing,” noted Duckie Brown’s Steven Cox and Daniel Silver. “Because that’s true, he can wear a more modern, slim silhouette.”

For Obama’s big day on Jan. 20 on the steps of the Capitol, designers mostly see him in updated yet classic sartorial style. Tommy Hilfiger envisions a patriotic color combo of a navy blue suit, white shirt and red tie, while Brioni advocates for the iconic three-piece gray flannel suit, with an Italian twist: double vents. Of course, with men’s wear, it’s all about the subtle details, so Paul Smith edges his suit lapels with black grosgrain tape, and Kenneth Cole suggests a Fifties-era — but chic again — tie bar. Come evening and the inaugural balls, Rag & Bone and Dsquared want Obama to don a full-on tuxedo with tails, but Savile Row’s Richard James really pushes the envelope with a sequined tuxedo jacket.

Interestingly, none of the designers include that pesky campaign issue in their sketches: an American flag lapel pin.

...continuing his theme of ultra-luxe accessories in go-to-hell colors with his latest offering for men, the Garda Alligator Driver (above). The classic Italian driving shoe is given a stylish twist in brilliantly-hued genuine alligator skin with equestrian hardware. The loafers come in five colors: Emerald Green, Cherry Red, Marine Blue, Purple, and Black, and are priced at $3,800 a pair. For an additional $920, you can also get a matching alligator skin belt (available in most of the same colors) with an engravable sterling silver buckle. Lauren has also made belts and boots in vivid alligator for women, but it's in the men's items that these colors really pop.

Kanye West Would Like To Intern For Raf Simons?

This was news to me...almost "WTF" style news. Would I intern at Raf? fu** yeah, but my sentiments mirror those of Raf. Can you have Kanye as your intern?
:s

KANYE WEST, the infamously self-assured singer who stated to The Associated Press last month that he “will go down as the voice of this generation,” is apparently far more humble when it comes to fashion. In the hope of better understanding the design process, Mr. West has announced that he wants to take time off from his music career and intern at a fashion house. Preferably, Louis Vuitton or Raf Simons.

“I was blown away from the planet when he told me,” said Mr. Simons, by phone from Antwerp, Belgium. “I know he’s very serious about this — I don’t take it as a joke — but how can I imagine him being my intern? It’s a very extreme situation.”

Ketel One Vodka...Try It!

Last week I hit this Ketel One vodka tasting event with my homegirl Yvonne and got tore up from the floor up! Actually not really...we hit cool little spot called Kultura and I sampled Ketal One for the first time and was pleasantly surprised as to how smooth it was. For most part, a lot of folks I know just grab whatver is around...for me going to the liquor store is typically a mission! Getting lost in a sea of spirits, wines, lagers, and ales...usually I'm searching for the best fit for the moment. After that event Ketel One really may have become my go-to vodka. Browsing the net I randomly stumble across a blog by New Yorker named Aiesha, and read a post where she mentioning ordering a"Ketel One and Cranberry"...on the same day I decided I was going to put this post up...so I'm presuming it's actually a drink of choice for many already.

Anyway...try it out...let me know if you agree or not.

FTL - Wolford Medallion Tights

For The Ladies...These tights are actually pretty tight! I had conversation with some ladies about the stocking/leggings/tights/hosiery crazy nowadays and learned that the look really only works on some females...can't be too tall, can't be too short. So for the ladies trying to stay fashionable consult with your girls before you end up looking awkward...or "scandalous".

These particular tights actually have a "transparent knitting technique" which allows the appearance of the opaque design to seem as though your legs are so sexy they just never want to come off or fall down. A really good look.

Available at Wolford Boutique of London for any takers.

Can Women Are Drink Men Under The Table?

Maybe this is why my homegirl Jen from 2BD was acting all tough when it came to going shot for shot on the trip to cottage this past weekend. This is a very interesting article form NY Mag:

That more women are drinking, yes--more than 48 percent acknowledge having had at least one drink in the past month (up from 42 percent in 1992). But beyond that, the women who drink are drinking more. The number of women who identify as moderate-to-heavy drinkers has risen in the last ten years, while the number of women who say they are light drinkers has declined. At the same time, men are reining in their drinking, meaning that the gender gap of alcohol consumption is narrowing all the time.

Jessica Biel graces the cover of the UK edition of GQ in January. Inside she talks about Hollywood and her good looks, but won't engage about boyfriend Justin Timberlake: "Justin Timberlake is the one part of my life that I own."

On the movie world:
"I think it's almost historical in Hollywood that there just aren't so many good parts for women as they are for men. I think as long as you're playing the wife or the girlfriend to the lead then you're always playing second fiddle to the guys."

On why she has a career in Hollywood:
"Your face and your body can get your foot in the door, obviously. And I'm thankful for that."

Coldplay Swagger Jacks?

Say it ain't so!
I love this record...but I think they may have lifted it. LOL

Rock guitarist Joe Satriani has sued British band Coldplay, accusing the Grammy-nominated stars of plagiarizing one of his songs.

Satriani's copyright infringement suit, filed on Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, claims the Coldplay song "Viva La Vida" incorporates "substantial original portions" of his 2004 instrumental "If I Could Fly."

The 52-year-old guitar virtuoso is seeking a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" attributable to the alleged copyright infringement.

Toronto City Blues For Sammy...

From Coach Of The Year to we don't want you here! The Toronto Raptors officially canned Mitchell and I must say I had mixed reaction to it. Surprised, yet not so much...I've been preaching that he should go for some time now, but I just didn't expect it to happen. However after a 39 point loss on Tuesday against Denver I suppose that was the straw that broke the camels back.

I am excited to see Jay Triano step in as the interim coach, as well as the first full-time Canadian-born NBA head coach in history!

All things considered I'm confident GM Bryan Colangelo to steer the team out the gutter, and at the current moment he's taking it on the chin like a champ.

"We are not a basketball team or a roster without flaws...I'm wearing this one, just like Sam's wearing it. This falls on me..." Said Colangelo. "Winning is everything."
