Make It Rain: The Love of Money [APP]

For those who have grown tired of Flappy Bird, or didn't even have the opportunity to get tired of Flappy Bird, Make It Rain: The Love of Money is the current top free iOS App, and it's an anticapitalist spoof that’s making $50K per day!

May is the has been downloaded 1.6 million times, mostly on the iPhone, and it’s making $50,000 per day, half from in-game purchases and half from ads. Most of this has happened in the last week, with something like 250,000 installs per day. Based on reviews and other data, it appears to be particularly popular with young men in high school and college — the frat boy demographic.

Make It Rain co-creator Josh Segall is a bit befuddled. “The new Flappy Bird is about income inequality and political corruption,” he said. “I wish we had been expecting it because maybe then we would have made a game that people would want to play for longer.”

GAMEPLAY: You essentially make it rain until the virtual FBI investigate you virtual stockpile and threaten to seize it, but if you have the funds, you simply buy them off with a virtual bribe. Afterwards you may want to buy a virtual cigarette factory, or possibly a virtual strip mine. In the meantime, hire a virtual PR person and a virtual lobbyist.

It’s not necessarily clear that the app’s cynical undertones are getting through to its users. Sure, when you open the app the first screen shows quotes like “The love of money is the root of all evil.” But then you start swiping as fast as you can to make it rain.

“Some people are in on the joke and really get it and love it,” Segall said. “Some people it takes longer to get, I think.” He sent over a negative-turned-positive app review in which a person initially left a complaint about having spent so much real-world money to make his virtual-world money pile grow faster without reaching any sort of end point. The reviewer later added an update that said, “You end up scrambling for all this money, and for what? I’m definitely not happier I accumulated it. Valuable lesson.”

Mobius Motors: The African Built SUV [CARS]

Mobius Motors designs, manufactures and sells durable, affordable vehicles for Africa's mass market. We are reimagining the car; designing our vehicles around common road terrain, transport usage and consumer income profiles across the region.

American billionaire Ronald Lauder has reportedly provided start-up capital to Mobius Motors, a startup Kenyan car-manufacturing company that plans to build Africa’s cheapest car. Developed by 29 year-old Kenyan computer engineer Joel Jackson, will cost $10,000. Jackson and his team had initially planned for the car to cost $6,000, but as a result of the increasing cost of procuring steel spare parts, Mobius has had to raise its selling price to $10,000 to make the product commercially viable. But even at $10,000, Jackson believes his car is a preferable option to acquiring a pre-owned vehicle for the same amount.

According to a report by Kenya’s Business Daily, Lauder, who is worth about $3.8 billion, is offering Mobius Motors an undisclosed amount in debt which is convertible to equity. Mobius will use the money to assemble its first 50 units and establish a distribution network in Kenya. The most common vehicles across regions like East Africa are imported from more developed countries such as Japan, UAE and India. These vehicles are designed for areas with good road infrastructure - they are not built for an African environment. High import duties also make these vehicles relatively expensive.

To serve the African mass market, Mobius has built a car around the needs of local consumers.

The vehicles have the key functionality and durability of an off-road car, fit for travelling and carrying goods for long distances on bumpy dirt roads. The price is similar to a seven year old sedan vehicle, which is not designed to operate on degraded terrain reliably, nor carry the heavier loads common among consumers in these areas.

Mobius aims to empower transport entrepreneurs across Africa not just with more appropriate vehicles, but with the financing and business advice needed to operate a sustainable transport business, with interior than can be configured to haul either people or 1,100 pounds of cargo.

Marine Debris Typeface [FONTS]

This creation is a full set of letters made up of the 2041 pieces of junk Star went onto collect. From the start, the designer set a few guidelines: no bottles, cans, plastic bags or candy wrappers. He only wanted pieces that had washed up on shore. He also committed to keeping everything as-is. “The rules were to find the letterforms as they were, with no manipulation of any kind,” he says. “With some letters it would have been easy to bend or twist something to fit–but that would have been cheating my own rules. I enjoyed the idea that this was just a search and I didn’t have to do any thinking, just walk and observe.”

You can see all 2041 pieces in Star’s short film HERE, and when the typeface is released later this year, every single one of his pieces will be included, even if it’s only useful as ornamentation.

Apple iPhone 6 Sneak Peek [TECH]

Excitement for Apple’s next-generation iPhone 6 is really starting to build now, and new leaks are coming fast and furious. Supposed schematics for the iPhone 6 leaked from Apple’s manufacturing partners some time ago and as always, third-party protective case makers have been using them to begin designing cases in an effort to get a leg up on the competition. This year, however, people are also using the schematics to build mockups of the iPhone 6, and they may give us a very good idea of what the finished product will look like.

Now, new photos of iPhone 6 mockups have surfaced, potentially showing off all three colors the redesigned iPhone 6 side by side for the first time.

Take a look at the Space Grey, Silver, & Gold mock ups HERE.

Big K.R.I.T - Mt. Olympus [VIDEO]

K.R.I.T.'s sophomore album Cadillactica is coming soon.

Overdosed on hocus-pocus, jibber-jabber
Snap on my stature was firebreathin' dragon
King of every castle, how you signin' rappers?
All these labels must be givin' out a raffle
Wranglin' like cattle, keep a nigga shackled
Leavin' people baffled, tap dance nigga
Misleadin' all of your rap fans, nigga
Might as well just do a lap dance, nigga
Sap ass nigga
Do whatever for some dap ass nigga
I ain't got time
To watch out for children, stay out my kitchen
The shit that I'm cookin' ain't meant for your kind
Crackin' and bashin' the shit out your spine
King with a crown, humble and tall
Tyrants never keep quiet, they'd rather be violent
So I'm beheading them all!
The lay of the land, I'm settin' fire to buildings and bridges
You ain't sell out a show until you sell out one in Mississippi
What’s good for Hip Hop may not be good for my soul
So, I keep flexin', wreckin', for the people that respect it
Check it, fuck a Control

(Are you not entertained!)

TYPO iPhone Keyboard Case [GADGETS]

For those who miss their Blackberry keyboard, but are simply too attached to their beloved iPhone, now you can pick up a TYPO (Co-founded by American Idol presenter Ryan Seacrest) case and qwerty keyboard for the iPhone 5/5s models from colette. The reviews have been less than stellar, but I'm still looking forward to testing it out myself.

Priced at €140 EUR (approximately $195 USD), the keyboard is available for order through colette’s website. It's pricy, but I figure they've incorporated the legal fees they had to shell out for Blackberry in the lawsuit earlier this year. [CEO Says BlackBerry Sued Typo Because The Keyboard 'Is Our Identity']

Snapchat x Video & Instant Messaging [APPS]

Snapchat, everybody's favorite sexting app, has just grown up. Now, to complement its simple self-destructing messages, the iOS and Android apps both handle instant messaging and live video chats.

To use them, you just swipe right from the main camera screen to find a list of friends, from where you can send them a message or start a video call. In keeping with Snapchat's ethos, text is wiped as soon as you exit a chat screen, though you can tap messages to save if you so wish.

Video chats are designed to be ephemeral: a throbbing blue icon tells you when a friend notices you, and you press—and have to hold—it to provide a one-way video stream to their device. Your friend can do the same right back at you.

It's an interesting pair of additions. They radically expand functionality of Snapchat, but also avoid changing the purpose of the app. Sexting has never had it so good. [Snapchat]

BELLE - post.traumatic.stress.disorder EP [MUSIC]

Belle is a Toronto based alternative R&B singer I stumbled across on twitter while chanting #WeTheNorth. Her sound is certainly in the vein of a partynextdoor, or theWeeknd. An accomplished pianist, you can feel her pain through the prism of her music. Sexually molested at a young age, the consequence of her innocence lost is her debut EP post.traumatic.stress.disorder (ptsd)  Which is currently on SoundCloud, and it certainly showcases the multi-talented singer/songwriter’s ability to sing in command over vibey, trap influenced beats that are reminiscent of gun shots in the dark like a sweet serenade!

Tab: Mobile Restaurant Payments [APPS]

Gone is the awkward pause when the server brings the check. Tab, a new free mobile payment application that launches today in Toronto, offers a simplified payment process for restaurant-goers. To get started, users download the app, create a profile, and register their credit card information. When at a participating restaurant, users can simply "create a tab" or "join" an existing tab (the bill will automatically split between the members). When it's time for the bill, users tell the server they are "paying with Tab" and leave whenever they are ready. Tab is currently ready to use at 13 participating eateries that includes The Chase, Playa Cabana Hacienda, Blowfish, with more being added in the coming weeks.

The Tab Team is led by Adam Epstein, Fahd Ananta, andMichael Kimel. Epstein founded HUDDLERS, a mobile sports scheduling app for recreational athletes. Ananta, the technical lead, founded Chime acquired by Hubspot in 2013. Kimel is the principal of MJK Capital, and a partner in the Chase Hospitality Group. Other funders of the company include Tyler Bozak and Phil Kesselof the Toronto Maple Leafs, as well as various leaders in the Toronto food and beverage industry.

disORDERLY Web Series [COMEDY]

The BAMN (By Any Means Necessary) boys are back at it! The film & television production company established by co-owners/founders Mazin Elsadig, Jonathan Malen, & Al Mukadam have hand crafted DISORDERLY, a funny new web series about three friends who work as orderlies in a mental health center and turn out to have even more issues than their patients.

Everyone has their issues... including Lionel, Ira, and Mookie, the three 20 something homeboys who work as orderlies at Clearview - a mental health centre. The show follows Mookie, Lionel and Ira, as they attempt to balance their quirks, foibles, mental disorders, and idiosyncrasies with those of the patients. The show uses honest and grounded humor as a way into the very prevalent issue of mental health.

I'd liken the series to a hybrid of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest meets Seinfeld meets Community. Check out the clips below and decide for yourself.

The #WeTheNorth Campaign [RAPTORS]

This is Toronto through a basketball-glass darkly. It points toward the future of how the Raptors will project themselves onto the NBA landscape.

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment took the first real step in its promised rebrand of the team on Wednesday with the release of a campaign entitled We The North.

The first video spot has an old-school Nike-feel - plus fire, snow and wolves. It’s Game of Thrones minus the nudity.

Future feat. André 3000 – Benz Friendz (Watchutola) [MUSIC]

White button down and emory scrubs
Had to write her birthday down 'cause my memory sucks
But this shit come back up like some acid reflux
Or Michael Jackson jacket with some plastic zip ups
I was zippin' through the city and I don't give a fuck
1994 Toyota Land Cruiser because
That bitch never broke down on me, why would I do that to her
Simplism, symbolism I pull up at a club
And might never buy a new car again if I can help it
'Cause if I buy one they will sell ten and what I'm left with
Throw a nigga one on his rim, then we might can talk
Til then I will ride my fucking bike or walk

Girl Talk x Freeway: Broken Ankles EP [MUSIC]

Two worlds will collide on Broken Ankles, a collaborative EP between veteran rapper Freewayand mash-up connoisseur Girl Talk. Both artists hail from Pennsylvania, though their paths have been anything but similar. Now, the two join forces on this high-octane project that samples everyone one from Beyoncé and OutKast to Nine Inch Nails and Notorious B.I.G. Also included are appearances from Waka Flocka Flame, Jadakiss, and Freeway's fellow State Property memberYoung Chris.

"I wanted to work closer to traditional song structure compared to my last few albums, but still include some detailed sample splicing and change-ups when it felt appropriate," Girl Talk says of their collaborative effort. "The overall structure is what I thought worked best with Freeway's style... It's always important to me to have an album that works as a whole; something that has a calculated flow to it, which is intended to be listened to front to back."

FED UP [MOVIES]

This is the movie the food industry doesn't want you to see. FED UP blows the lid off everything we thought we knew about food and weight loss, revealing a 30-year campaign by the food industry, aided by the U.S. government, to mislead and confuse the American public, resulting in one of the largest health epidemics in history. From Katie Couric, Laurie David (Oscar winning producer of AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH) and director Stephanie Soechtig, FED UP will change the way you eat forever... that being said, pizza is a vegetable!

Watch the trailer HERE.

OutKast x Coachella 2014 Full Set [VIDEO]

Outkast's reunion at Coachella on Friday night after nearly 10 years away from performing was followed up with some fans criticizing the group's on-stage energy and the set's bizarre ending. Outkast played 27 songs for the Coachella crowd, but a 28th track, "The Whole World" with Killer Mike, was nixed because of time.

"I'm sorry, but they actually cut us off," Andre 3000 said to the crowd. "I really appreciate you all coming out. I know it's kind of weird, 20 years later and shit. Thank you for coming out."

Some reactions from Outkast's Coachella performance cab be found HERE.

Naked Julia Louis-Dreyfus x Rolling Stone Magazine [COVER]

"Julia Louis-Dreyfus is wearing absolutely nothing but the immortal words of Thomas Jefferson on our new cover," boasts Rolling Stone, dubbing the 53-year-old "The First Lady of Comedy." With the new season of her whip-smart HBO political comedy "Veep" underway, we couldn't agree more.

In the issue, Louis-Dreyfus talks about her career evolution, from "Saturday Night Live" through "Seinfeld" and "The Old Adventures of New Christine" to "Veep." She also talks about real live veeps Al Gore ("who did win, by the way") and Joe Biden.

The actress also addresses a common misconception about her -- that she is a billionaire by family fortune, thanks to her father's wealth.

"I've been attached to that," she tells Rolling Stone, clarifying that it's her father'sbusiness that's valued in billions. "It's unbelievable, because whatever I do, people just assume it's true. Welcome to the fuckin' Internet."

To be noted it was the declaration of independence that was signed by John Hancock, not the constitution as it appears just above the dimples on the small of her back.

Her most recognizable character is Elaine Benes for the hit comedy show Seinfeld (A personal favourite) has long since been my TV crush. HuffPo has put together an editorial outlining why she is actually one of the worst people in the world.

Special guests are limited to buzzmakers Action Bronson and Danny Brown, while group architect and resident producer Erick Arc Elliott handles the bulk of the set's boardwork. Earlier this month, long-time Late Show host David Letterman announced that he would be retiring in 2015. It now begs the question, who/what will replace The Colbert Report? Good question, right?

The Bar Chef [BOOKS]

One of the world’s pre-eminent mixologists serves up the theatre, mystery and science behind his signature modern cocktails.

Vanilla-and-hickory smoked Manhattan, anyone?

`BarChef is a cocktail lounge on Queen Street West in Toronto. Dedicated to the art and science of the cocktail, its beauty lies in the colours and details behind the bar—from apothecary jars filled with bitters and syrups to bell jars and 100-pound blocks of ice. Owner Frankie Solarik holds court in his fedora, chipping ice, talking to patrons (a mix of rockers, hipsters, business people, locals and celebrities) and enjoying his craft thoroughly.

Solarik is a leading figure of the global cocktail renaissance. His book, The Bar Chef, explores the importance of engaging all the senses when creating modernist cocktails. Depth and balance—the ideas behind great wines, and great food and wine pairings—are vital to a magnificent drink. Chapters detail the elements of the set-up, the art and craft of mixology and, of course, include recipes for syrups, infusions, bitters and the cocktails themselves. A chapter for non-alcoholic drinks rounds out the book.

This book is aimed at adventurous mixologists, enthusiasts whowant to hone their skills and taste, and who want to experience something of Solarik’s genius at home. This book is neither comprehensive nor “general.” Rather, it is a carefully curated sampling of Solarik’s creations, featuring recipes that are challenging but achievable, and oh so delicious.
